Beth: Hallo Martin. Wie war die Schule?

Beth: Hi Martin. How was school?

Martin: Oh, es war toll. Die Geschichtsstunde war sehr interessant.

Martin: Oh, it was great. The history lesson was very interesting.

Beth: Wirklich? Was hast du gelernt?

Beth: Really? What did you learn?

Martin: Wir haben den "Großen Brand von London" durchgenommen. Dieser zerstörte vier Fünftel von London im Jahre 1666.

Martin: We learned about the "Great Fire of London". It destroyed four fifths of London in 1666.

Beth: Das ist furchtbar!

Beth: That's horrible!

Martin: Es hat eigentlich mehr Menschenleben gerettet als getötet.

Martin: It actually saved more people's lives that it killed.

Beth: Wie ist das möglich?

Beth: How is that possible?

Martin: Das Feuer tötete viele Ratten welche die Pest übertragen haben. Die Opferzahl der Pest sank danach rapide.

Martin: The fire killed a lot of rats which helped to transmit the plague. Plague victims dropped rapidly after the fire.

Beth: Das ist ja interessant. Du lernst viel in der Schule!

Beth: That's interesting. You learn a lot in school!

Marin: Ja, das stimmt!

Martin: Yes, I do!
