What is diff between du and dir?

from Stardust27 13.01.2010 (22:38)
Du and Dir are conjugations. They represent Masculine and Feminine. Just like Die and Der.

No, not true - nothing to do with gender (masculine/feminine). They represent different cases... the "you" in German depends on what what functions/context it has in the sentence...
from deutch01 24.02.2010 (23:13)
du is nominative, dir is dative, dich is accusative.
We have the same thing in English apart from we use 'your' or 'you' for nominative, accusative and dative.

So: Can you?---Kannst du? Nominative
I love you -- Ich liebe dich.....Accusative
I give you the butter---Ich gebe dir den Butter. Dative

(Although i may stand corrected thats the basic idea)

Of course then you have genetiv case, but thats another story.
